Good Morning: My name is Rebecca Craig. I am the administrator of the Harmony Surgery Center in Fort Collins and the president of the Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, better known as CASCA.

Before I begin my formal remarks I want to acknowledge the hard work of Dr. Marty McReynolds and Deb Northrop. All too often many of us are guilty of not acknowledging the hard work of so many in public service. Today we will not make that mistake.

We want to thank Marty and Deb for making a real effort to gain more knowledge about our industry and about those of us involved in CASCA. We have worked with them on a number of complex issues and did so in a respectful and forthright manner.

Approximately 80% of all surgeries in the U.S. are now being performed in an outpatient setting. This evolution has taken place because patients truly benefit from the experience—easy access, very personalized care, affordability and significantly lower chance of infection compared to other setting – all these characteristics have made ASCs the preferred provider many of the most common medical procedures that get men and women back to work.

The business community has supported ambulatory surgery centers because employees get back to work quickly and do not experience the problem of taking time off from work, getting bumped and having to reschedule. Additionally, the businesses have seen first hand that ASCs provide a venue for surgeries that cost significantly less than similar procedures performed at hospitals.…
